The perceptual tendency to separate the visual field into a dominant object (figure) and a background (ground). A foundational principle of visual design.
Explained
- The eye instinctively separates a focal object from its background.
- Clear figure-ground lets people know what to attend to and what to treat as context.
- When the separation is weak, elements blur together and the screen feels confusing.
- Contrast, depth, and spacing all strengthen which layer reads as foreground.
